I would give this 3.5 stars if I could, but since I have to choose, I think it's more toward 3 stars than it is 4. Even though I'm not rating it 5 stars, I think it's still worth buying and working from; there are just a few things I wish I knew prior to purchasing, and a few ways I think the book could be improved. To give you some context, my skill in knitting is on the low end of intermediate. I've been knitting for a year and a half and I've made lots of hats, one pair of mittens, a few scarves....most projects have been worsted or bulky weight. I prefer knitting in the round. For me, the difficulty of making these dolls was a stretch for my skill level. I'd never worked with fingering weight yarn before, and everything about these dolls was much smaller than I was expecting. The dolls are only about 11 inches tall finished, so all the work is very intricate. There is also a TON of seaming. You'll spend nearly as much time seaming and sewing pieces together as you will knitting them. In some cases I think the patterns could be worked differently to reduce the amount of seaming. For example, a tiny little jacket is made from four separate pieces - the front, the back, and two sleeves knitted flat. If you don't love sewing (I don't), you'll find a lot of the work tedious.I found the book uneven in its explanations and coverage. There are multiple pictures and paragraphs to explain different techniques that are not unique to these dolls (e.g., making a french knot), but techniques that ARE unique to these dollars are glossed over. For example, there's a simple instruction to "sew the head to the body" without pictures or guidance as to how to best achieve this. If space was an issue, I think it would have been better to fully explain and illustrate the aspects unique to doll-making and let users look up basic knitting techniques on YouTube (as I always end up doing anyway).I think the author could have provided more guidance about the level of difficulty. These dolls are not created equally when it comes to difficulty. I would recommend mixing and matching your first doll together - pick a pattern with boots (intarsia is a huge, knotted mess when making the shoes with laces) and a body that doesn't involve striping or a lot of color changes. Also, although I haven't tried it, I don't see why you couldn't work the patterns in worsted weight yarn on larger needles - I'd imagine you'd just end up with a bigger doll and you wouldn't have to strain your eyes to work tiny stitches in fingering weight yarn.I'm happy with the end result, but know what you're getting into before you buy, or this book will end up collecting dust on your shelf and you'll have a few half-knitted body parts at the bottom of your bag for years to come. :) What a wonderful easy-to-follow book of knitted dolls. I knit dolls for the Ronald McDonald House, and I'm sure these are going to be a big hit. I've made eight of them. Loved mixing and matching outfits and changing up the colors. You'll never get bored with all these choices. (This designer has many more patterns that are equally as cute. I've made her monkey, and it is adorable!)
